Seagrass Outreach Project

Hi, I’m Maddy and as well as being part of the Admin Team I’m the coordinator for FMC’s latest project - our Seagrass Outreach Project! I joined FMC in January 2021 after completing my Zoology degree at the University of Exeter, and next year I aim to start a masters in marine mammal science.

I was first introduced to the wonderful world of seagrass a few years back when I helped with a seagrass project whilst working as a research student at Paignton Zoo. I then wrote an article for Bloom in Doom magazine about the importance of seagrass to try and raise awareness about this habitat that was little known at the time, but since then seagrass has shot to fame!

Our new Seagrass Outreach Project is funded by Sea-Changers and we aim to engage members of the local community with the seagrass habitat we have on our doorstep. We will be running monthly snorkelling and seagrass information sessions in the summer and creating digital outreach resources such as educational videos to help inspire people about this habitat. A key focus of this project is making marine conservation more accessible to and inclusive of disadvantaged members of the community, especially young people; the snorkel sessions will be free with all equipment provided and the digital outreach resources will also be free to download and allow those not able to visit the sea the chance to still engage with and learn about the important seagrass habitat.

If you’d like to learn more about seagrass and see this beautiful and important habitat for yourself come and join us at Kiln Quay in Flushing on:

  • Sunday 17th July 13:00-16:00

  • Sunday 31st July 12:00-15:00

  • Sunday 14th August 12:00-15:00

  • Saturday 10th September 12:30-15:30

To sign up for the snorkels on these days go to Eventbrite. And watch this space for the online resources!
